Delphi & The Environment

In 2006 a programme of waste reduction was implemented and included separation and sorting of waste. We recycle as much as possible. A self-contained mechanical water treatment plant was installed on site to deal with all of the effluent coming from the business. The plant ensures that the water coming out of our treatment plant is as clean as the water coming in.

The energy requirements of the site are high due to the nature of the business so it was decided to use a combination of carbon neutral energy sources coupled with efficient delivery systems. This will eventually involve the introduction of two medium sized wood chip boilers and solar panels for water preheat. Our electricity comes from Air-Tricity. The complex is situated in 300 acres of mature forest that is ready for harvesting; this will be slowly thinned and chipped to provide the wood chips for the sites boilers. Given the current size of the forest coupled with a replanting programme it is estimated that the forest will continue to be a viable fuel source for the business for years to come.

Heat exchangers have been installed in the accommodation wing to further increase efficiencies. The pipes have been insulated to the highest possible standards, as have the attics. The new wing, which we inherited planning permission for, coupled with the fact of having a very small window to build resulted in us being somewhat limited to the changes we could make to the choice of materials used in the build, however we did use recycled copper as a roof, recycled newspaper as insulation in the attics and all of the wood came from certified managed sustainable forests.

All bulbs throughout the resort have been replaced by cfl, long life or low voltage lights and all of the new rooms are fitted with energy saving cards that ensure that there is no wastage of energy when the units are unoccupied.

On an activity front we are committed to activities that are sustainable in environmental terms- in other words things that will have little or no impact on the environment - kayaking, walking, surfing, biking, using the local landscape with only low impact programmes.
